Preparations for installing the trim
Prior to buying the trim, you need to make certain that you are buying the correct amount. Measure the space and take meticulous notes. You have to measure for the tile and for the stainless steel tile trim. Purchase the tools and materials that you need to complete the project. Try and get as accurate a number as you can for your measurements. Although you can go back out and get more materials, it takes time to do so.
In order for you to add the trim, you will need to remove the tiles that are on the edge. You have to do this because the trim sits under the tile. Make certain that you have extra tiles or that you can pull up tiles without breaking them. Once you have the tiles pulled up you have to get rid of high or low spots so that you can re-lay the tile once the trim is laid down.
Installing the trim
Now you begin actually installing the trim. Measure where you are putting the trim. Mark the trim carefully. Make certain that you cut directly on the marks. Once you cut it you cannot put it back together. You also want it to fit into the location that you are trying to put it in. At this point, you can screw the tile trim onto whatever surface you are trying to put it onto. However, it is not necessary because the tile adhesive will hold the trim. If you screw it down, it will just make certain that it does not slip out over time. Another note, if you are screwing into concrete, you will need to use a masonry bit to drill into the concrete so that you can screw into it.
Before you start re-laying the tile, make certain all of your trim is put in place. As you begin to lay the tiles, you need to lay them one to four at a time. If you try to do more than this, you run the risk of the adhesive drying before you can put the tiles down. Mix your adhesive and begin to lay your tiles down where they previously were. You may need to cut tiles to make them fit. Now that all your tiles are laid down you need to put spacers between them to dry. Once they dry, make certain you double check the amount of time of the adhesive package, it is usually 24- 48 hours, remove the spacers and re-grout the tile.
